Latest additions to SOE’s Corporate Partner and Affiliate schemes
SOE’s Corporate Partner and Affiliate schemes recently benefited from the addition of four new members – AQA, T&RS Engineering Ltd and the University of Central Lancashire, who are the Society’s latest Corporate Partners, and the Combustion Engineering Association (CEA), the latest addition to SOE’s Corporate Affiliate scheme.
AQA
As the largest provider of GCSEs and A-levels in the UK, AQA has launched a new initiative to improve the quality of technical vocational qualifications for young people interested in engineering. As part of this, the organisation is reaching out to engineering experts (including professional bodies, employers and higher education providers) to ensure that the qualifications they produce reflect the skills and knowledge that the engineering industry requires.
In alignment with this aim, AQA has become the latest addition to SOE’s successful Corporate Partner scheme, headed by development manager Roger O’Loughlin.
“The input of organisations such as SOE is vital to us to ensure we are promoting best practice and offering qualifications that reflect current industry practice, and which provide the learners who complete them with the best possible opportunities for progression,” explains Phillip Bryant, senior strategist (engineering) for AQA. In order to do so, AQA will be submitting all their engineering qualifications to SOE for technical review.

T&RS Engineering Ltd
T&RS Engineering Ltd provides professional engineering consultancy services to the rail industry, specialising in the maintenance and overhaul of traction and rolling stock vehicles and fleets of trains.
The company, which was founded in 1999, is based in Doncaster and much of the experience within the company has come from the rail heritage of the area. Its client base includes train operating and rolling stock leasing companies, and freight and on-track plant and machinery.

The Combustion Engineering Association (CEA)
Founded in 1933, the CEA is an educational charity with the aim of increasing the development and understanding of the combustion industry, and has a long history of promoting efficiency in the utilisation of all types of fuel.
They work with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Environment Agency on emission limits from combustion plants, as well as working on the health and safety issues associated with biomass plants.
“As a not-for-profit educational charity we try very hard to help people understand both the health and safety implications of working on industrial steam and hot water boiler systems, and the legal obligations of both in the UK and the EU,” explains CEA director David Kilpatrick. “Through the work that SOE and the CEA do, we see both organisations as being able to benefit from the Corporate Affiliate scheme.”

The University of Central Lancashire
“The SOE is very well regarded in the industry for IEng accreditation, which will soon be mandatory for employees in many large organisations,” says UCLan senior lecturer Nathalie Renevier. “Developing a clear accreditation pathway for all our students will increase the number of students joining professional bodies. We are aiming to have all our graduates accredited with professional bodies.”
By becoming an SOE Corporate Partner, UCLan will benefit from accreditation of their CPD short courses to complement their own CPD-accredited courses, and a projected increase in their student and returning student numbers. They are also expecting to see an increase in university/industry based projects, and a boost to their local, national and international standing.
This will support the university’s new
Engineering Innovation Centre
, due to open in 2018.
“The main benefit of Corporate Partnership will be for our students to graduate with professional recognition, and validation of their academic skills and competences through industrial placements,” says Nathalie. “We hope that UCLan will be seen not only as a university delivering degrees but a university delivering degrees sought after by industry.”

The Corporate Partner and Affiliate schemes were set up to provide mutually beneficial relationships between organisations and the Society, helping organisations reach their goals in education, training, professional standards, safety, and best practice.
