How To Make Money Writing Articles Online [The Ultimate Guide]

How To Make Money Writing Articles Online

the ultimate guide to making money by writing articles online

This guide is going to teach you the exact strategy you need to make money writing articles online. Working online allows you to support your travels and stay on the road for as long as you want.

Living abroad isn’t free.

After travelling and working my way around the world for the past 6 years, I can tell you there will be moments where you’re running low on money and need to find a way to support your travels.

It happens to

all

of us.

Having an income to play around with allows you to afford to embark on epic travel adventures and travel for as long as you want.

In fact, if you’re not working, it’s easy to

run out of money

sooner than you thought.

The problem with long-term travel is that you’re constantly moving around. This makes trying to find short-term jobs difficult because they require working visas and generally a commitment of at least a few months.

It really isn’t practical for people who like to travel a lot.

Luckily, there’s an

easier way

to support your travels.

Working online solves this problem. And one of the easiest ways to earn an income online is by writing articles for websites and magazines.

Writing Articles Online

While many people learn

how to start a travel blog

, it takes a while to start making money from it.

There are many different ways to make money writing online from copywriting to technical writing to

SEO article writing

.

However, I’ve found that writing

blog articles

is the best way to get paid to write online for those of you who might not have a lot of writing experience but still want to earn a decent income.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to have your own blog or website to make money writing articles online. While this may help showcase your writing abilities and acts as a portfolio, almost anyone with basic grammatical skills can write blog articles online.

When I first started writing online, I had no experience and wasn’t a very good writer.

I started writing

SEO articles

because it was the fastest and easiest way to get started. I made over $500 doing this in the first couple of weeks in my spare time.

The problem is that SEO articles are generally quite boring to write.

However, if you aren’t feeling comfortable writing blog posts yet, writing SEO articles might be a smoother way to start out.

Average Pay Per Blog Article

No, you’re not going to become a millionaire writing articles online.

But the lifestyle that this type of work creates is even better.

Imagine being able to travel wherever you want, whenever you want and not have to worry about running out of money. This is the type of lifestyle that working online creates.

Depending on which websites you’re writing for the pay varies quite significantly. Blog articles pay anywhere between $10-$400 each, but you can expect to receive an average pay of

$50-$150 per article

.

When starting out you might only receive $20 per article and that’s okay because it will build both your experience and confidence when it comes to writing online.

Where To Find Work

Now that you know the potential that writing articles online has, you probably want to know where you can find work.

As I’ve mentioned there are plenty of websites that pay writers.

First things first. What are you interested in?

The internet is

full

of websites from just about every category from cooking to parenting to writing.

Since you’re reading this site, I’ll assume that you’re interested in travel. Lucky for you this is one of the best topics to write about because there are plenty of high paying websites out there.

If you want to get an idea of the type of jobs out there, take a look at some of the job boards.

iWriter

,

Freelance Writing Jobs

and

Pro Blogger

are a great place to start.

The highest paying jobs are generally for larger websites and online magazines with bigger budgets. I’ve created a list of over

100 different websites that you can write for and make money online

.

Download the list

, look at how much each website/magazine pays, see how many words you need to write (all contained in the list) and you’re good to go.

How To Pitch An Article Idea

Pitching ideas to websites and magazines is one of the most important steps to make money writing articles online.

Unfortunately, the reality is that many of these paying websites (not all of them) receive 100+ pitches every day, so you need to stand out from the crowd.

The best way to stand out is by being different and adding a more personal touch. It’s not always the best writers that get gigs, it’s those who make the best pitch.

First things first, talk about

what you like about their website

and how it’s helped you. Mention one of their recent articles that you liked and briefly explain why.

I’ve found that going through their website,

seeing what’s missing

and presenting them with a solution is the best way to have a successful pitch.

For example, if you’re pitching an idea to a travel website that wrote a post about finding an apartment abroad but it was written 6 years ago, you could write an updated article that is more relevant to their readers.

Similarly, if you want to write destination based articles and you find that the website doesn’t have any articles talking about a specific destination, that’s a great opportunity to pitch an article related to that destination.

If you have a blog,

mention it

and link to it to showcase your writing abilities. If not, don’t worry, it’s not necessary. After you’ve written for a few different websites, link to the articles you’ve written to show off your writing skills.

If you’re blogs been featured on other websites, let them know in your pitch.

Here is a good example of a pitch that you can use:

Dear Editor,

I’ve been reading

ExampleSite.com

since _______ and I find myself coming back to your website weekly for travel advice and inspiration.

I particularly enjoyed your recent article “_____________”. I would love to read more about “

topic

” and I’m sure your readers would too.

Option 1: My name is _____ and I run the popular travel blog _____ where I share travel advice about “

topic

“.

Option 2: My name is _____ and I’m a travel writer who has been featured in “

website 1

(with a link to article) and

website 2

(with a link to article)”.

I have a great article idea for

Example Site

titled “__________” which would go into detail about ______.

Let me know if you’re interested. I already know your blogging style, plus I understand what your readers love as I am one of them.;-)

Look forward to hearing from you,

Your Name

The real key is to keep it

short

and

personal

. Like I said earlier, you want to stand out from the crowd by being personal but don’t want to take up too much time from the editor, so keep it short.

Some websites require you to send an entire draft copy of the article when pitching your idea. I only recommend you send an entire article when you pitch if it specifically states that as a requirement and if you trust the website.

You

don’t

want them to steal your article and publish it as their own.

It’s extremely important to

read the guidelines

before pitching because if you don’t follow the guidelines your pitch will most likely be discarded without even being read.

In the list I created with more than

100 websites that pay writers

, there are links to all of the guideline pages for each website.

Article Ideas

There are plenty of different ways types of articles that you can create. Once again, be sure to

check the guidelines

to see what is expected of you.

• Stories –

These are the most common type of articles for travel websites. Write about one of your recent travel experiences and pitch the idea to one of the websites from the list.

eg. “

Housesitting Adventure: Living In The Deep Jungle Of Sri Lanka

• Lists

– One of the easiest ways to write posts quickly is by doing lists. These are both popular and easy to write as they are very well structured.

eg. “

5 Simple Ways To Earn Money Before Moving Abroad

• Guides

– Definitive, Comprehensive, Ultimate and How To guides are a great way to talk about all of the knowledge you have about a certain topic or destination.

eg. “

The Definitive Guide To Working For Free Accommodation Anywhere In The World!

• Rant

– Being controversial is a great way for one of your articles to go viral. However, you will most likely receive a lot of negative comments (as well as positive) which might not sit well with the website you’re writing for.

eg. “

Yes, I’m Pretty and I’m Travelling Alone

Inspirational

– Being inspirational is a great way to engage with readers and share a story of how you overcame something or did something extraordinary.

eg. “

How I Studied Abroad For 4 Years (And How You Can Too)!

Blog Headlines

Coming up with a good headline is vital to the success of a blog post.

80% of people

click through to read an article based on the headline alone. Here is a great article on

creating the perfect headline

Get Paid To Write Articles At Home (Full-Time)

How can you turn writing articles online into a full-time gig?

When you first start out you probably won’t be able to make a full-time income. It takes a bit of time to improve your writing skills, create relationships with editors and get regular recurring writing assignments.

You can always mix it up and try different types of writing to see what’s easier for you. Try

SEO writing

as well as blog article writing so you can find more work.

But writing full time

isn’t

too difficult.

If you’re able to live overseas for less than $1,000 per month (most long-term travellers can), then you only need to be making $250 per week.

This means that you only need to write 5 x $50 articles or 2-3 x $100 articles every week.

At the beginning, it might take you a while to write an article, but after a bit of practice, you’ll be able to write quality blog posts in a few short hours.

Essentially this allows you more time to

enjoy your travels

and less time having to worry about work.

My recommendation is to get started straight away by having a look at some of the different writing

opportunities out there

.

Conclusion

Even if you don’t have any writing experience.

Even if you’re a self-proclaimed terrible writer.

Even if you’re constantly travelling and don’t stay in one destination for too long.

You can make a living and make money writing articles online.

I’m proof that it doesn’t require any form of extraordinary talent. All you have to do is follow the process that you’ve just learned because it’s proven to generate results.

There will be moments when the process gets hard, but if you keep persisting, after a little while you’ll have more work than you know what to do with.

Have you tried making money writing articles online? Do you have any tips and tricks that I didn’t mention?
